One of Tokyo’s most famous tourist spots with museums and a zoo.

Ueno Zoo

Ueno Zoological Gardens is Japan's oldest zoo, established in 1882 and home to over 3,000 animals from 350 species. The zoo's giant pandas are among the most popular attractions. Opening hours are 9:30–17:00 (closed Mondays). Admission is ¥600 for adults, ¥300 for junior high school students, and free for elementary school children and younger. The zoo is a 12-minute walk from Hostel JAZ.

Tokyo National Museum

The Tokyo National Museum is Japan's largest and oldest museum, founded in 1872. It houses over 120,000 objects including national treasures and important cultural properties covering Japanese, Asian, and Egyptian art and history. The main Honkan building is an impressive example of early 20th-century Japanese architecture. Opening hours are 9:30–17:00 (closed Mondays). Admission starts from ¥1,000 for adults.

Shinobazu Pond

Shinobazu Pond is a scenic lotus pond located within Ueno Park, featuring Benten Hall (Bentendo), a small island shrine dedicated to Benzaiten, the goddess of wealth and arts. In summer, the pond is completely covered with lotus flowers, creating a stunning natural display. The surrounding path is popular for jogging and leisurely walks. Rowboat and pedal boat rentals are available for ¥600 per 30 minutes.

Getting Around Ueno

Ueno Station is a major transport hub served by JR Yamanote Line, JR Keihin-Tohoku Line, JR Joban Line, Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, and Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line. From Ueno, Asakusa is 2 minutes by subway, Akihabara is 4 minutes by JR, and Tokyo Station is 7 minutes by JR Shinkansen. Hostel JAZ is an 8-minute walk from Ueno Station's Iriya Exit, making it an ideal base for exploring all of central Tokyo.

Where to Eat Near Ueno

Ueno offers a wide range of dining options. Ameyoko Market is great for affordable street food including fresh seafood, takoyaki, and grilled meats. Ueno's back streets (Kita-Ueno area, near Hostel JAZ) have many local ramen shops, izakayas, and convenience stores open 24 hours. Kappabashi — the kitchenware district — is a 15-minute walk away and has great sushi restaurants.
